LEARN ABOUT SUPPLEMENTAL PROCEDURES

Getting dental implants is a life-changing process, and it’s important that your dentist takes every measure to ensure the success of your treatment. That’s why Dr. Matt Boscia will inform you during your consultation if you’ll need supplemental procedures.

Supplemental procedures allow more people to be candidates for dental implants by strengthening their jawbone and gums. With bone and gum grafting, you’ll be able to have a strong foundation for a solution that will last a lifetime.

WHAT IS BONE GRAFTING?

Bone grafting is necessary to stop the process of jawbone deterioration.

Everyday activities like eating and talking can cause jawbone deterioration if you’re missing a tooth. Without the stimulation from that tooth, your jawbone doesn’t get its proper exercise and support. Wearing dentures can also expedite deterioration.

This used to mean that you wouldn’t be an ideal candidate for dental implants. However, with bone grafting, Dr. Boscia can actually halt deterioration and help your jaw regain bone mass.

The process involves taking a bone sample, often donated or synthetic, and grafting it to the deficient areas of your jawbone. Your jaw absorbs the sample, creating a strong foundation for implants.

When you get your implants placed, your jawbone will osseointegrate with the fixture, absorbing it so you have maximum support. As a result, your implant looks and functions like a real tooth.

GUM GRAFTING OR SOFT TISSUE AUGMENTATION

Gum grafting is a procedure that reverses the damage caused by gum recession.

Sometimes, the gum tissue surrounding your tooth wears away. This can be a result of:

Periodontal Disease:

A bacterial infection of the gums that damages the surrounding structures. It can cause gum recession and even jawbone deterioration.

Brushing Teeth Too Hard:

Brushing your teeth too hard can cause damage to your gums and prompt them to recede.

Failure to Protect Your Oral Health:

Neglecting an oral health routine that includes brushing and flossing twice a day can leave plaque on your teeth and cause gums to recede.

When the gum tissue wears away, it exposes the sensitive tooth root, which can attract food and debris. The recessive pockets can get infected and cause serious health issues, including tooth loss.

Gum grafting is similar to bone grafting. Dr. Boscia will take a sample tissue from the palate of your mouth and use it to fill in the deficient areas of your gums. They will naturally absorb the tissue sample, which strengthens your gums and gets them ready for dental implants.
